Who would have thought that self-care is a long and daunting journey?
What’s supposed to be a natural thing to do has become very challenging. I mean, it’s never easy to put yourself first, especially with what’s happening nowadays.
There are people suffering around us and the disasters seem never ending but despite all this, it’s important to commit to the most important person — you.
Are you familiar with the oxygen mask metaphor? If not, let me share it with you quickly.
When riding an airplane, there’s always a pre-flight briefing and one of the safety instructions is to “put your own oxygen mask before assisting others.”
This metaphor is applicable to self-care journey because the truth is, you can’t help others if something has already happened to you. As they say, “”you can’t give what you don’t have.”
So today, no matter how challenging or uncomfortable it is to put yourself first — to take some me-time, to rest, or to let go of toxic people and situations, find self care tips on how you can do it.
If you’re having a hard time, remember: you are not alone.
While you’re a strong, independent person, it’s not a bad idea to ask for help from your “person.” It can be a trusted friend, a significant other, a sibling, or basically anyone who wants nothing but the best for you.
Someone who can say, “Hey, I want you to take care of yourself because you deserve it no matter what.”
Having another person to remind you of what you want for yourself can help you become accountable when it comes to self-care and self-love.
Also, having a person who will give you your much-needed pep talk before going to a difficult conversation with another person can help boost your confidence.
For instance, if you want to talk to a toxic colleague or relative, having a quick conversation with your person can help lighten up the load. It might not make things easier but at least, you have someone to tell you that you deserve to be heard.
Often, we think that self-care should be done alone, especially when our issues often rely on trusting another person; however, there’s power in having someone who can support you and encourage you to prioritize yourself.
It’s not wrong to ask help.
It’s not wrong to have someone who will remind you genuinely and constantly that you are valued.
Because the truth is, you are.
And oh, don’t forget, putting yourself first is not selfish.
Cheers!
